Arts-in-Ed Schedule Shapes Up in Huntington

Arts-in-Education global GourmetThe Huntington School District’s arts-in-education program is finalizing its schedule of activities for the new school year.  It looks like it will be packed solid with a variety of presentations.  Students on every grade level will experience the program in some form.

Primary level students at Southdown, Jefferson, Flower Hill and Washington schools will be treated to numerous arts-in-ed opportunities throughout the year.

In October, first and second graders will be visited by the Sunshine Prevention Center for an innovative puppet show involving multi-cultural characters that will role play stories about conflict resolution, friendship, dealing with bullying and teasing and respect for diversity.  The visit will be in recognition of October being Disability Awareness Month.

In December, all primary students in every building will be visited by Ballet Ambassadors for the “Nutcracker in a Nutshell” program, which involves first graders being directed in a performance of this classic holiday story.  The youngsters will participate in a two hour rehearsal in the morning and later perform for fellow students in the afternoon.  Parents and guests of first graders will be invited to attend the afternoon assembly, too.

Other primary grade level arts-in-ed programs will include a visit to the historic Conklin House by second graders, a pair of presentations by author-illustrator Kathleen Bart on global cultures and her book, “A Tale of Two Teddies,” and an appearance for third graders by Kuniko Yamamota that will feature Japanese storytelling with mime, mask and music.

Theatreworks USA will be on hand in March to present “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and other stories” to second and third graders, who will travel to the Huntington High School auditorium for a special performance.

Huntington High School students will present “How are you Peeling,” to second graders next spring.  The performance is part of the Teens as Teachers program.  The core of the lesson will focus on interpreting emotions by reading facial expressions.

Details on all arts-in-ed programs are now being finalized across the grade spectrum and will be posted on the Huntington School District’s website (www.hufsd.edu) in coming weeks.
